History
From garage
to Auböckplatz.
In 1996 Mäx officially began tattooing in the garage of his Bad Ischl home and founded Tattoos to the Max. When the original space became too small, the studio moved to its current home at Auböckplatz 9 in the winter of 2008/09.
Felix Kaltenbach took over the studio in January 2026 and continues to run it with the existing team. The reception and waiting area is a place for consultations, voucher purchases and browsing our small flea-market selection. Behind it, the artists work at several stations in a relaxed atmosphere and to the highest hygiene standards.

How do I make an appointment?
Visit us during reception hours, or send your request by email or Instagram DM. Tell us as much as possible about your idea, placement and size, and add relevant reference images. We will match you with the right artist and arrange a consultation or appointment.
We begin drawing once an appointment has been agreed; drafts are not sent in advance. Any final changes are worked out together on the day.
What should I bring to my appointment?
Please arrive well rested, having eaten, and in comfortable clothes that may get stained. The skin to be tattooed should be uninjured, free from sunburn, unshaven and easy to access. Pillows, books and snacks are welcome; please do not bring friends or family to the session.
At present, we accept cash only.
How do I care for a new tattoo?
A tattoo needs at least three weeks to heal. Follow your artist’s individual advice for cling film or healing patch. Always wash your hands before contact, keep the tattoo clean and use only a very thin layer of healing ointment if needed. Do not scratch or over-moisturise.
During healing, avoid sun, sauna, tanning beds, chlorinated or salt water, massages and friction. Contact us immediately if you are unsure or notice a problem.
Which tattoo styles do you offer?
We offer Traditional, Black & Grey, Realism, Neo-Traditional, Lettering, Anime, durable fine-line tattoos and more. Visiting artists expand the range further.
What should I know about deposits?
We may agree on a cash deposit to secure your appointment. It is deducted from the final tattoo price. The deposit remains valid if you cancel or reschedule at least three working days in advance; it may be forfeited after a later cancellation or a no-show.
Can I get a tattoo if I am under 18?
We do not tattoo anyone under 16. For clients aged 16 or 17, we make a responsible decision on a case-by-case basis and require written consent from a verifiable legal guardian.
Do you sell vouchers, and can I visit without an appointment?
Vouchers of any value are available at the studio for cash and can be redeemed with any of our artists. The first Saturday of every month is Walk-in Day for tattoos up to palm size; sign-up is from 11 am to 12 noon. If you want to visit spontaneously outside reception hours, please check with us first to make sure someone is available.
Do you offer piercing?
No. We tattoo exclusively.

Reception is staffed on Fridays from 1 to 6 pm and Saturdays from 11 am to 2 pm. Tattooing is available daily by appointment.
